Priyanka Gandhi Vadra To Take Oath As MP; Joining Family In Parliament

On Thursday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who recently won the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, will take her oath as a Member of Parliament (MP).

This victory marks a significant milestone as Priyanka joins her brother Rahul Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi in Parliament, making it the first time in history that all three members of the Gandhi family will serve as MPs simultaneously.

Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat after securing victories in both Wayanad and Rae Bareli.

Rahul chose to retain the Rae Bareli seat, and the Congress Party fielded his sister Priyanka to contest from Wayanad.

Priyanka triumphed with a margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating CPI(M) candidate Sathyan Mokeri. Her victory margin surpassed that of Rahul’s in the 2019 general elections.

Priyanka’s win also adds her to the list of MPs who have at least one family member serving in either House of Parliament.

Sonia Gandhi secured a Rajya Sabha seat after opting out of the 2024 general elections from Rae Bareli.

On Wednesday, Congress leaders from Wayanad formally handed over Priyanka’s election certificate in New Delhi, extending their best wishes for her new role.

Rahul Gandhi celebrated the moment, offering sweets to Priyanka following the ceremony.

Priyanka Gandhi Expresses Gratitude, Says, “Wayanad’s Trust Means Everything”

Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support, taking to X, Priyanka Gandhi posted, “My colleagues from Wayanad brought my certificate of election today. For me, it is not just a document, it is a symbol of your love, trust, and the values we are committed to. Thank you Wayanad, for choosing me to take forward this journey to build a better future for yourselves.”

Priyanka’s entry into active electoral politics comes 20 years after she campaigned for Sonia in Rae Bareli and Rahul in Amethi during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

In addition to Priyanka, Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan will also take the oath after winning the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in a by-election with 5,86,788 votes, following the passing of the previous Congress MP, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
