According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to travel to Kyiv in August, marking his first visit to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion of the country on 24 February 2022.
This visit underscores a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between India and Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
The announcement comes on the heels of intense diplomatic exchanges between the two nations in July.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba engaged in high-level telephonic discussions, while National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Yermak also held talks, signaling a deepening dialogue between New Delhi and Kyiv.
During a brief encounter at the G7 Summit in Italy in June, PM Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the prospect of enhancing bilateral ties.
President Zelensky extended an invitation to PM Modi to visit Ukraine, following Modi’s triumphant third consecutive electoral victory in India on 4 June.
Zelensky’s gesture was seen as a significant diplomatic outreach, reflecting the close attention Ukraine is paying to India’s role in the international arena.
In a March conversation with President Zelensky, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The Prime Minister reassured Zelensky of India’s willingness to contribute to a diplomatic solution, underscoring India’s people-centric approach and dedication to global peace.
Earlier this month, during his visit to Moscow, PM Modi reiterated India’s stance on the conflict, stating, “There is no solution on the battlefield. Dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward.”
PM Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to upholding the United Nations Charter, particularly with regard to respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty.
