President’s Rule In WB: Demand Intensifies Following Rape And Murder Of Trainee Doctor

A demand for President’s rule in West Bengal has gained momentum following the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical Hospital. Advocate Vineet Jindal has written to the President, citing a significant breakdown in law and order under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.

Jindal’s letter points to ongoing violence and murder in West Bengal as evidence of the government’s failure. He highlights incidents such as violence during Panchayat and Lok Sabha elections, as well as human rights violations in Sandeshkhali. According to Jindal, these issues demonstrate a clear failure to uphold Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to life.

In response to the public outcry demanding President’s rule in West Bengal and protests from the medical community, the Mamata Banerjee government has transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI has already questioned five doctors and arrested 19 people for vandalism related to the incident.

On the night of August 8-9, the trainee doctor, a second-year MD student in Chest Medicine, was raped and murdered. She had dined with friends around midnight before the assault occurred. The case has prompted several petitions to the Calcutta High Court, including one from the victim’s parents, who seek a court-monitored investigation.

During the court proceedings, the High Court criticized Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, former head of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for his role in the case. The court has also questioned the delay in notifying the victim’s parents and the alleged protection afforded to Dr. Ghosh by the government.
