Kolkata Police have arrested 19 individuals in connection with the recent vandalism at the emergency department of R G Kar Medical College & Hospital.
The incident, which occurred late Wednesday night, involved significant damage to various sections of the hospital, including the hybrid critical care unit (HCCU), critical care unit (CCU), the emergency department ticket counter, and a medicine storeroom.
Police stated on Friday that social media feedback helped identify five of the 19 arrested individuals.
The statement urged the public to help identify additional suspects, with their photographs shared on social media earlier this week.
The statement read, “19 arrests so far in R G Kar hospital vandalism. Social media feedback helped identify five of them. If you recognise any of the suspects from our earlier posts, kindly inform us. Thank you for your support & trust.”
The vandalism resulted in extensive damage, including the destruction of life-saving medicines valued at several lakhs of rupees and the CCTV camera in the medicine storeroom.
However, police confirmed that the seminar hall, identified as the crime scene in the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor, was not affected by the vandalism.
Medical students and junior doctors at R G Kar Medical College continue to protest, demanding justice for the woman doctor allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall on 9 August.
Some protesters suggested that the vandals might have mistakenly targeted the emergency department, thinking it was the seminar hall.
Local authorities initially handled the case, but the Calcutta High Court has ordered its transfer to the CBI.
Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the crime and continue to seek public help in identifying the remaining suspects involved in the vandalism.
