President Murmu Recasts AMU Governance With Three Eminent Visitor’s Nominees

The President of India and Visitor of Aligarh Muslim University, Smt Droupadi Murmu, has appointed three eminent academicians as her nominees to the AMU Executive Council.

Prof Pankaj Mittal, Prof Shahid Akhtar, and Prof Geeta Bhatt will serve for a three-year term.

The move strengthens AMU’s apex governing body with broad national expertise and strategic vision.

The appointments signal a conscious effort to align AMU’s historic legacy with contemporary higher education priorities.

By appointing leaders from policy, management, and inclusive education, the Visitor has strengthened AMU’s institutional governance with national academic expertise.

Prof Pankaj Mittal, Secretary General of the Association of Indian Universities, brings a comprehensive national perspective.

She engages daily with universities across the country and shapes dialogue on reforms, collaboration, and academic standards.

Her presence on the Executive Council will align AMU more closely with national policies and strengthen inter-university engagement.

Strengthening AMU Governance Expertise

Observers say her systemic understanding will aid long-term planning and institutional alignment.

Prof (Dr) Shahid Akhtar, from the Department of Management at Jamia Millia Islamia, contributes strong expertise in governance, administration, and ethical management.

His tenure at the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions gives him deep insight into minority education laws and regulations.

His appointment will sharpen administrative efficiency, strengthen professional programmes, and balance academic ideals with employability-driven outcomes.

Prof Geeta Bhatt adds a vital dimension of inclusivity. As Director of the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board, she expanded higher education access for women outside regular colleges.

Her experience positions her to guide innovative outreach models and gender-inclusive policies at AMU, in line with national education goals.

The AMU Executive Council oversees academic policy, finances, administration, and institutional development.

The inclusion of these three nominees creates a balanced advisory group that blends policy acumen, governance expertise, and social commitment.

Appointed under Statute 16(1)(XII), the nominations reflect a merit-driven approach.

As AMU adapts to the demands of 21st-century higher education, this leadership infusion will support key reforms.

The move will uphold the university’s core principles of excellence and inclusivity.
