President Lee Jae Myung Visit Signals Strategic Reset In India–South Korea Relations

The recent visit of South Korea President Lee Jae Myung to India has marked a decisive recalibration in bilateral relations with South Korea. Both nations acknowledged that earlier engagement remained insufficient in a world shaped by tariffs, semiconductor competition, supply-chain disruptions, and intensifying geopolitical pressures.

A report by One World Outlook described the partnership as a practical convergence between a large emerging democracy and an advanced industrial economy. It highlighted how both countries can jointly drive innovation, employment, and capacity-building beyond conventional diplomacy.

The delay in high-level engagement reflected competing priorities rather than hostility.

India concentrated on strengthening ties with the United States, managing China relations, expanding Gulf partnerships, and leading the Global South.

South Korea, however, focused on North Korea, its security reliance on Washington, and complex economic ties with China.

The report emphasised a strategic shift towards advanced sectors. Both countries now prioritise semiconductors, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, payment systems, battery supply chains, and high-end manufacturing. This transition signals a move beyond traditional industries like automobiles and steel.

India contributes scale, talent, and robust digital public infrastructure. South Korea offers manufacturing precision, export expertise, and technological depth. Together, they can co-develop integrated ecosystems rather than merely expand trade.

The concept of a ‘Digital Bridge’ underlines shared standards, interoperable systems, and trusted technology alliances.

Such collaboration gains importance as chips, cloud platforms, and AI increasingly intersect with national security concerns.

The report concluded that deeper cooperation could diversify supply chains and create new industrial corridors. It also stressed defence production, maritime security, and a stronger Global South role.

If sustained, this engagement could redefine Asia’s strategic and economic architecture.
