President Droupadi Murmu Stresses Water Conservation Importance At Jal Mahotsav 2026 National Campaign

On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu underscored the importance of water conservation and public participation while addressing the Jal Mahotsav 2026. She highlighted the need for collective action to ensure sustainable water management nationwide.

During her address, the President stated that water in India represents more than a basic necessity.

It remains closely linked with the nation’s culture, traditions, livelihoods and community life.

The President recalled that for decades, particularly in rural regions, villagers, especially women and children, travelled long distances to fetch drinking water.

She noted that access to clean water directly influences time, health and human dignity.

To tackle these challenges, the government launched the Jal Jeevan Mission.

The programme aims to supply safe and adequate drinking water to rural households through functional tap connections.

The President remarked that the mission has greatly enhanced drinking water availability in villages.

Many households that once struggled for potable water now receive safe water directly at home.

President Murmu stressed that natural resource conservation becomes effective when both the government and citizens share responsibility.

She said community engagement remains vital for managing and protecting water resources.

The President expressed optimism about initiatives such as ‘Jal Arpan Diwas’, under which water supply infrastructure transfers to gram panchayats.

This step strengthens local ownership and improves grassroots management.

President Murmu also praised the contribution of Self-Help Groups in water-related programmes.

These groups assist in water testing, operations and maintenance in several regions. She noted that empowering women through such initiatives strengthens water security efforts.

President Murmu emphasised the need for a coordinated strategy to enhance national water security.

Authorities promote greywater management in villages alongside the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Agencies, including the Central Groundwater Board, support groundwater recharge and conservation programmes.

She also highlighted nationwide campaigns such as Catch the Rain and Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari, which encourage rainwater harvesting and public involvement.

President Murmu urged citizens to treat water as a precious resource rather than a mere commodity.

She emphasised educating younger generations about conservation to secure future water availability.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti is organising Jal Mahotsav from March 8 to March 22 to promote public participation in rural drinking water services.
