President Droupadi Murmu has expressed her deep dismay and horror over the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. In a statement to news agency PTI, she declared, “Enough is enough,” emphasizing the urgent need for societal change to prevent such brutal crimes against women.
In her first public comments on the tragic incident, President Murmu voiced her support for the ongoing protests in Kolkata, calling for swift justice. She stressed the critical importance of changing societal attitudes toward women, ensuring their safety, and upholding their dignity in every sphere of life.
President Murmu highlighted the disturbing reality that while citizens, including students and doctors, were protesting in Kolkata, criminals continued to operate freely elsewhere. She asserted that “no civilized society can allow daughters and sisters to be subjected to such atrocities.”
Reflecting on the 12 years since the infamous Nirbhaya case, President Murmu criticized society’s tendency to forget the countless rape cases that have occurred since then. “This ‘collective amnesia’ is obnoxious,” she stated, urging for a sustained effort to remember and address crimes against women.

The President condemned the “deplorable mindset” that often perceives women as less powerful, less capable, and less intelligent. She called for society to engage in “honest, unbiased self-introspection” and to confront difficult questions about its treatment of women.
For those unaware, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The crime has sparked public outrage and protests across the state, with demands for swift justice and the death penalty for the accused.
