Pratapgarh House Collapse: Six Family Members Die After Heavy Rain

Six members of a family died and another sustained injuries after a nearly 100-year-old house collapsed during heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district early Thursday.

The incident occurred in the Mahuli locality under the Kotwali police station area.

All seven family members were sleeping in the same room when the structure suddenly collapsed and buried them beneath the debris.

Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the scene after receiving information about the collapse at around 2 AM.

Rescuers removed the rubble and took all seven victims to the district hospital, where doctors declared six dead.

The deceased included a couple, their son, daughter-in-law and two young children. The only survivor, Aman Srivastava, remains in hospital.

Aman said he awoke to find himself buried under the debris but managed to escape. He initially tried to rescue his trapped relatives before shouting for help and alerting neighbours.

“All seven of us were sleeping in the same room. I was rescued, but they all died,” he told reporters.

Neighbour Poonam Srivastava said debris from the upper floor crashed onto the lower level while the family slept, trapping everyone inside.

Circle Officer Ashutosh Mishra said police and firefighters immediately launched a rescue operation after receiving the alert.

Teams later cleared the remaining debris and completed the recovery work.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the collapse.

Heavy rainfall may have weakened the century-old structure before it gave way.
