India observes Police Commemoration Day on October 21 every year to honour police personnel who died in the line of duty.
The day commemorates 10 Indian policemen killed by heavily armed Chinese troops in an ambush at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
The observance serves as a reminder of the risks police personnel face while protecting citizens, maintaining peace and upholding the law.
The National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, was dedicated to the nation on October 21, 2018. It honours personnel from police organisations across the country who sacrificed their lives in service.
The memorial features a central sculpture, the Wall of Valour and a museum documenting the history and service of India’s police forces.
Police Commemoration Day honours fallen personnel through tributes held across the country.
The occasion recognises their contribution to national security and public safety while remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
