Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his excitement about Charaideo Moidam in Assam being added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. In his 112th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ he encouraged people to visit this historic site.
PM Modi discussed the significance of Charaideo Moidam, saying, “Today, I want to talk about something that will make every Indian proud. Have you heard of Charaideo Moidam? If not, you will soon, and you’ll share its story with enthusiasm.”
Charaideo Moidam is now the 43rd World Heritage Site in India and the first from the northeastern region. Modi explained that Charaideo, which means “shining city on the hills,” was the first capital of the Ahom Dynasty. The Moidam is a type of hillock-like structure covered with soil, containing rooms below. It was used by the Ahom people to honor their ancestors and store valuables.

“This practice of honoring ancestors is unique,” said PM Modi. He added that community worship also took place at this site. The Ahom Empire, which began in the 13th century and lasted until the early 19th century, was notable for its long duration, reflecting strong principles and beliefs.
Modi recalled unveiling the tallest statue of Ahom warrior Lachit Borphukan on March 9 this year, a symbol of courage. He noted that paying respects at Lachit Moidam was a special experience.
With Charaideo Moidam now a World Heritage Site, Modi expects it to attract more tourists. He encouraged everyone to include this site in their future travel plans.
