PM Surya Ghar Yojana Crosses 50 Lakh Beneficiaries Across India

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar programme, has crossed the milestone of benefiting more than 50.06 lakh households across the country, the government announced on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the achievement comes just over two years after the scheme’s launch.

The programme has significantly outpaced the previous decade, during which 7.94 lakh rooftop solar installations were completed.

With a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the initiative has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy programmes.

Currently, nearly one lakh households join the scheme every six days.

Installation momentum has also strengthened sharply. The daily installation rate increased more than threefold over the past nine months, rising from 5,038 installations in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 installations in July 2026.

July 2026 recorded the scheme’s highest monthly achievement, with 5.06 lakh households benefiting from rooftop solar installations.

The government has released Rs 28,024 crore in subsidies directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. Nearly 19 lakh households now receive zero electricity bills.

More than 12 lakh households earned a combined Rs 421 crore by selling surplus electricity during FY25.

On average, each household generated an additional annual income of around Rs 3,500.

The government also completed around 1.6 lakh installations for PMAY, BPL and SC/ST households across four states.

Authorities have approved the model for implementation in 12 states.

The initiative has also strengthened employment across the solar sector. So far, 34,219 vendors have registered under the scheme, including 29,469 active vendors.

More than 2.32 lakh people have received training through capacity-building programmes.

Cumulatively, the scheme has commissioned 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity across the country.
