Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday remembered former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 34th death anniversary.
Rajiv Gandhi served as India’s Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989.
He took office after the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and at 40, became the youngest Prime Minister in the country’s history.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On his death anniversary today, I pay my tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji.”
Gandhi remained in office until the 1989 general elections and later served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
He stepped down in December 1990, just months before being killed in a terrorist attack.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid tribute on X, writing, “Remembering former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his punyatithi today.”
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge visited Veer Bhumi in Delhi to pay homage on behalf of the Congress party.
The party shared a tribute on X, stating, “On the death anniversary of late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, LoP Shri
@RahulGandhi paid tribute to him at Veer Bhumi. Rajiv ji’s visionary leadership transformed the foundations of our nation, built on Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. His enduring legacy continues to guide our vision.”
Kharge, in a separate post, described Rajiv Gandhi as ‘a great son of India’ and highlighted his efforts in modernising the country.
“Rajiv Gandhi — a great son of India, inspired hope among millions of Indians. His visionary and courageous interventions were instrumental in preparing India for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century,” he posted on X.
Kharge listed key achievements, noting, “These include lowering the voting age to 18, strengthening Panchayati Raj, spearheading the Telecom and IT revolution, implementing a computerisation program, securing sustained peace accords, launching a universal immunisation program, and introducing a new education policy focused on inclusive learning.”
Kharge concluded by saying, “Our deepest respects to the Former PM, Bharat Ratna, Rajiv Gandhi on his martyrdom day.”
