PM Narendra Modi Reaffirms India’s Commitment To Wildlife Conservation On World Wildlife Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday marked World Wildlife Day by reiterating India’s strong commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

In a series of posts, the Prime Minister described the occasion as a celebration of the planet’s rich faunal diversity and the ecosystems that sustain life. He said the day also recognises the efforts of individuals and organisations working towards wildlife protection.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “World Wildlife Day is about celebrating the incredible faunal diversity that enriches our planet and sustains our ecosystems. It is a day to acknowledge everyone working towards wildlife protection. We reaffirm our commitment to conservation, sustainable practices and protecting habitats so that our wildlife continues to thrive.”

Highlighting India’s unique ecological wealth, the Prime Minister noted that the country is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary species. He said India accounts for over 70 per cent of the global tiger population, hosts the largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros and Asiatic elephants, and remains the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lion.

PM Modi also outlined key initiatives undertaken by the NDA government to strengthen wildlife conservation. He cited the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance as a major step towards fostering global collaboration and sharing best practices in conservation.

In addition, he referred to focused efforts aimed at protecting endangered species such as the Great Indian Bustard, Gharial and Sloth Bear, as well as the ongoing translocation of cheetahs to restore their presence in India.

Observed annually on 3 March, World Wildlife Day furthermore serves as a global reminder of the urgent need to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable development.

India’s leadership, backed by policy initiatives and cultural values, continues to reinforce the message that protecting wildlife is central to securing the planet’s ecological future.
