PM Modi’s Mann Ki Baat Mention Boosts Sikkim Entrepreneur Chimi Bhutia

A mention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his monthly radio address, Mann Ki Baat, has brought national attention to Chimi Ongmu Bhutia, founder of Lagstal Studio, leaving the Sikkim-based entrepreneur deeply moved.

Bhutia described the recognition as overwhelming. She said she was still coming to terms with hearing her name on such a prominent platform. In addition, she added that the acknowledgement not only validates her efforts but also highlights emerging entrepreneurs across the country.

Speaking about her work, Bhutia emphasised the untapped economic value of bamboo in the Northeast. She pointed out that despite its abundance, the material has not yet been fully developed into a sustainable income source.

According to her, stronger research frameworks and skilled manpower are essential to unlock its full potential. She characterised her own achievements as modest, adding that many others in the sector are working under similar constraints, particularly when it comes to securing funding.

The Prime Minister’s focus on the bamboo industry has, however, strengthened her confidence about future prospects.

Bhutia also linked the sector’s growth to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, stressing that existing government initiatives could yield greater results if implemented more effectively. She acknowledged that policy support has played a key role in her journey, benefiting thousands across the region.

Reflecting on her early days, Chimi Ongmu Bhutia credited reforms introduced under the National Bamboo Mission in 2017. These reforms enabled her to establish a bamboo-based handicrafts business.

Those measures, she said, provided a foundation for many entrepreneurs to enter the field.

While highlighting the opportunities available, Bhutia cautioned that success in the industry requires persistence and long-term commitment. She shared that her own progress came after nearly a decade of consistent effort.

Concluding with a message to aspiring entrepreneurs, Bhutia encouraged patience and dedication, noting that meaningful work eventually speaks for itself.
