PM Modi’s Lok Sabha Address Deferred As Opposition Protests Force Adjournment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address the Lok Sabha at 5 PM on Wednesday. The House adjourned until Thursday morning due to sustained Opposition protests.

Continuous sloganeering and disorder compelled the Chair to halt proceedings, officials confirmed.

The Lower House reconvened at 5 PM to debate the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. The session quickly descended into chaos.

Opposition members objected strongly after the House denied Rahul Gandhi permission to quote from an unpublished book. The disputed material reportedly includes excerpts from the memoirs of former Army Chief General MM Naravane.

Sandhya Ray urged members to stay seated and let the House function. Her repeated appeals failed to restore order.

Opposition MPs moved into the well of the House and displayed pamphlets, intensifying the disruption.

The Chair subsequently announced the adjournment of the House until 11 AM on Thursday.

When proceedings resumed briefly at 5 PM, BJP MP PP Chaudhary from Rajasthan’s Pali constituency spoke on the Motion of Thanks. He expressed appreciation to Speaker Om Birla for permitting his participation and criticised the Opposition for what he described as deliberate attempts to stall parliamentary business.

He also condemned the alleged act of tearing papers and throwing them towards the presiding Dalit leader.

Chaudhary alleged that the disruption formed part of a planned strategy, carried out with the tacit approval of Rahul Gandhi.

The Lok Sabha has witnessed repeated interruptions over the past two days, reflecting a deepening confrontation between the Treasury benches and the Opposition.

At the centre of the standoff lies the Opposition’s demand to discuss India-China border tensions, particularly the August 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.

Rahul Gandhi has cited references from General Naravane’s memoirs, which reportedly mention political indecision during the crisis. Union Ministers strongly countered these claims.

Speaker Om Birla rejected repeated references to the issue, citing violations of parliamentary rules.

On Tuesday, similar protests erupted when Rahul Gandhi was denied permission under Rule 349, which prohibits reading from books or documents unrelated to House business.

The incident led to disciplinary action, including the suspension of eight Opposition MPs for the remainder of the session.
