Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged athletes participating in the inaugural World Yogasana Championship to become global ambassadors of the Ayush Ministry’s ‘Yoga 365’ campaign after returning to their respective countries.
Addressing the opening ceremony in Ahmedabad, Prime Minister Modi said the initiative aims to encourage year-round engagement with yoga and inspire healthier lifestyles across communities.
“Taking this thought forward, the Ministry of AYUSH has launched the ‘Yoga 365’ campaign,” he said.
The Prime Minister linked the campaign to this year’s International Day of Yoga theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’. He emphasised that yoga provides a simple and effective way for people to remain active, healthy, and energetic throughout their lives.
Prime Minister Modi encouraged athletes from around the world to take the message of yoga beyond the championship and help expand its global reach.
“When you return to your respective countries, take this message of yoga with you. All of you can become ambassadors of ‘Yoga 365’ in your own countries. Your experience and your faith in yoga can connect the entire world with this message,” he said.
The appeal came as Ahmedabad hosted the first-ever World Yogasana Championship from June 4 to 8.
The event has attracted more than 400 athletes from over 60 countries. It marks a landmark effort to establish Yogasana as a structured international sport.
PM Modi said yoga offers benefits beyond physical fitness and serves as an effective tool for preventive healthcare.
“Yoga frees people from indulgence and also from disease. Most importantly, it is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a minimum budget,” he added.
The Ayush Ministry has played a leading role in expanding yoga participation both in India and abroad. It has also supported the championship alongside sports authorities and organising bodies promoting Yogasana globally.
Congratulating the organisers and participants, PM Modi said the championship represented more than a sporting event. He added that athletes’ experiences and dedication could strengthen global awareness of yoga and support the continued growth of yoga-related initiatives throughout the year.
