PM Modi Urges Vigilance Against Digital Fraud; Calls For Safe KYC Updates In Mann Ki Baat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cautioned citizens about the growing menace of digital fraud and so-called ‘digital arrest’ scams, urging people to stay alert and protect their hard-earned savings.

Speaking during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister noted that although awareness about digital fraud has increased, disturbing incidents continue to surface.

He termed such crimes ‘unpardonable’ and expressed concern that fraudsters continue to target innocent individuals.

He highlighted how scammers have swindled senior citizens out of their lifetime earnings and cheated families of money saved for their children’s education.

Businesspersons, too, have fallen prey to fraudsters posing as senior officials and demanding confidential information over phone calls. He stressed that citizens must remain cautious and verify every request before sharing details.

Referring to the Know Your Customer (KYC) process, the Prime Minister addressed common doubts among bank customers who receive periodic reminders to update or re-KYC their details. He clarified that such measures are intended solely to safeguard customers’ bank accounts.

With pensions, subsidies, insurance and digital payment platforms linked to bank accounts, periodic re-verification is essential for financial security.

He warned that fraudsters misuse the KYC process through fake messages, links and calls.

Citizens should update KYC only via official bank branches or authorised apps and never share OTPs, Aadhaar or bank details with unknown callers.

Referring to Financial Literacy Week by the Reserve Bank of India, he said awareness efforts would continue year-round.

He also advised regularly changing passwords and urged people to follow timely KYC procedures to help build a strong and self-reliant India.
