Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi Remembers Kerala’s Youngest Organ Donor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the story of ten-month-old Aalin Sherin Abraham from Kerala, who became the state’s youngest organ donor after losing her life in a tragic accident in Pathanamthitta district.

Addressing the nation during Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said the infant, who had her entire life ahead of her, left the world suddenly, leaving many dreams unfulfilled. He said the pain her parents must be enduring cannot be expressed in words.

Even in profound grief, her father, Arun Abraham and mother, Sherin, chose to donate their daughter’s organs. The Prime Minister described the decision as one that filled every Indian’s heart with immense respect, adding that it reflected the magnitude of their thinking and character.

He also noted that awareness about organ donation is increasing and that medical research is gaining momentum.

Organs Gave Four Children A New Lease Of Life

Aalin, a native of Mallappally in Pathanamthitta, was declared brain dead on February 12 following a road accident. Her parents’ decision enabled four other children to receive a renewed chance at life.

Her kidneys, liver and heart valves were donated. The kidneys were transplanted into a 10-year-old child undergoing treatment at the S.A.T. Hospital, attached to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

In a coordinated medical effort, the organs were transported from Kochi to three hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram in three hours and 27 minutes, underscoring the strength of Kerala’s transplant network.

State Health Minister Veena George expressed deep appreciation for the family’s gesture, while Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan attended the funeral and announced that a proposed state organ transplant unit would be named after the infant. A state funeral was accorded to her, making her the youngest in Kerala to receive the honour.
