Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged NDA MPs to organise ‘Swadeshi Mela’ in their constituencies during the festive season to promote made-in-India products.
He also asked them to meet traders and explain the benefits of recent GST rate cuts, government sources said.
Addressing MPs a day before the vice-presidential election, PM Modi stressed the theme of ‘Swadeshi’. He said the GST rate reductions introduced by the government have created a positive impact, and MPs must build on this by engaging directly with the public.
PM Modi emphasised the importance of purchasing locally made goods and encouraged MPs to organise fairs from Navratri to Diwali.
“These are celebrations of our culture, but they should also be celebrations of self-reliance. Whatever we buy should be ‘Made in India’,” he said.
PM Modi appealed to citizens to prefer Indian decorative items and gifts during festivals.
The Prime Minister also urged businesses to avoid imported goods, saying that even small steps can strengthen the economy.
On 25 August, PM Modi made a similar appeal to citizens to choose made-in-India products during festivals as part of the effort to boost self-reliance and economic growth.
Meanwhile, the 56th meeting of the GST Council simplified the tax structure by merging four slabs into two main rates: 5 per cent and 18 per cent.
The 5 per cent slab now covers essentials such as food, dairy products, packaged snacks, utensils, agricultural machinery, handicrafts, sewing machines, and medical devices.
Government sources said these changes will make essential items more affordable, benefit small-scale industries, farmers, and traders, and boost demand during the festive season.
