Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Saturday. The meeting came soon after his return from visits to China and Japan.
This protocol of updating the President after every major foreign trip has been a constant feature of PM Modi’s tenure.
During his visit to Tianjin for the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, PM Modi discussed governance reforms, counter-terrorism, and economic cooperation. He also held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After returning, he personally informed President Murmu about the outcomes and their implications for India.
RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy drew a sharp contrast between PM Modi’s gesture and the breakdown in ties between former President Giani Zail Singh and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He recalled how Rajiv Gandhi allegedly ignored this very protocol, leaving Zail Singh humiliated.
Gurumurthy said he had helped draft a letter for Zail Singh in 1987, which was published in The Indian Express. He linked the letter to a series of scandals that later weakened Rajiv Gandhi’s government.
The rift between the two leaders symbolised a clash between authority and respect. It damaged trust between the highest constitutional offices of the country.
In contrast, PM Modi has consistently briefed the President of India, whether it was Ram Nath Kovind earlier or Droupadi Murmu now.
Observers say this is not just a formality but a reinforcement of democratic values.
By following this practice, PM Modi underscores the President’s role as custodian of the Constitution. His approach highlights that power in a democracy rests on humility and protocol, especially in dealings with the highest office of the land.
