PM Modi, UK PM Starmer To Hold Talks Today On India–UK Strategic Partnership

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, to deliberate on furthering the India–UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership consistent with Vision 2035.

Starmer arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday for a two-day visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, marking his first official visit to India.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders will assess progress across multiple areas of cooperation on 9 October in Mumbai.

Their discussions will cover key pillars of the ‘Vision 2035’ roadmap, including trade and investment, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate and energy, health, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

A statement from the MEA noted, “Both leaders will engage with businesses and industry leaders on opportunities presented by the India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) as a central pillar of the future India–UK economic partnership. They will also exchange views on issues of regional and global importance.”

Prime Ministers Modi and Starmer will jointly address the sixth edition of the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, where they will deliver keynote speeches and interact with policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators on the sidelines of the event.

The MEA further added, “The visit will build on the momentum and substance generated by the visit of Prime Minister Modi to the UK on 23–24 July 2025. It will provide a valuable opportunity to reaffirm the shared vision of India and the United Kingdom to build a forward-looking partnership.”

Outcomes of PM Modi’s July 2025 Visit to the UK

During PM Modi’s earlier visit, the two leaders met at the UK Prime Minister’s country residence at Chequers in Buckinghamshire, holding both one-on-one and delegation-level talks.

They welcomed the signing of the landmark India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which elevated the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to a higher level, boosting trade, investment, economic cooperation, and job creation across both countries.

Additionally, both sides had agreed to implement a Double Contribution Convention alongside the CETA to support professionals and the services sector in both nations, enhancing competitiveness and lowering business costs for enterprises.

Highlighting the expanding collaboration in finance, Prime Minister Modi had emphasised the potential for stronger ties between Gujarat’s GIFT City, India’s first international financial services centre, and the UK’s financial ecosystem.

The two leaders also celebrated the completion of a Defence Industrial Roadmap designed to encourage joint design, development, and production of defence equipment to meet domestic needs and serve global markets.

Expressing satisfaction with the ongoing cooperation between their armed forces, PM Modi and Starmer reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the defence and security partnership between India and the United Kingdom.
