Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Thiruvananthapuram is being viewed within the BJP as a crucial political intervention aimed at expanding the party’s footprint in Kerala ahead of the Assembly elections due in April–May.
Despite having no representation in the 140-member Assembly, the BJP is seeking to build momentum from its recent civic success in the state capital.
During the visit, PM Modi will unveil the Capital City Development Blueprint and flag off the Amrit Bharat rail service.
While the programme highlights development initiatives, the political significance of the visit is unmistakable.
The BJP wrested control of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in December, ending the CPI(M)’s 45-year dominance, a result the party has described as a watershed moment.
Since the civic victory, the Prime Minister has repeatedly cited Thiruvananthapuram as a symbol of new political possibilities in Kerala.
However, the BJP’s national leadership has also taken note of a key concern — the party’s vote share declined despite winning control of the corporation.
This paradox has prompted internal reassessment and a renewed push to broaden the party’s social and electoral base.
The capital city development blueprint will outline new central projects, the next Smart City phase, a comprehensive waste management plan, and a corridor linked to Vizhinjam port.
Party strategists believe showcasing Thiruvananthapuram as a BJP-led governance model can help reshape the party’s image in Kerala.
Events at Putharikandam Maidan will include the flagging off of four new trains and a public meeting addressed by PM Modi.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already set the agenda with a call for “Mission 2026”.
PM Modi’s visit aims to convert a symbolic civic victory into a sustained political narrative and position Thiruvananthapuram as the BJP’s launchpad in Kerala.
