PM Modi To Visit Seychelles As Guest Of Honour For National Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Seychelles from June 27 to 29 on a State visit to attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the country’s National Day as the Guest of Honour.

The visit comes at the invitation of Seychelles President Patrick Herminie and will likely further deepen the longstanding partnership between the two nations.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Herminie to review the full spectrum of cooperation between India and Seychelles. The leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

In addition, the Prime Minister will likely address the Seychelles National Assembly and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Seychelles remains a key maritime partner for India in the Indian Ocean Region and occupies an important place in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) as well as its commitment to the Global South.

The MEA said the visit will reaffirm the strong and enduring friendship between the two countries while reinforcing cooperation across multiple sectors.

India and Seychelles share deep historical, cultural and people-to-people ties that continue to shape their strategic partnership.

Recent Bilateral Engagements

Earlier in April, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Seychelles Foreign Minister Barry Faure on the sidelines of the 9th Indian Ocean Conference in Mauritius.

During the meeting, India reiterated its support for Seychelles in addressing current economic challenges and welcomed progress in implementing the Special Economic Package.

President Patrick Herminie visited India in February for a six-day State visit, during which both sides agreed to expand cooperation in digital transformation.

India is committed to supporting the development of Digital Public Infrastructure, including digital payments, based on Seychelles’ requirements.

Under the Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth and Security through Enhanced Linkages (SESEL), India also announced a Special Economic Package worth USD 175 million.

The package comprises USD 125 million in Rupee-denominated Line of Credit and USD 50 million in grant assistance for development projects, capacity building and maritime security initiatives.
