PM Modi To Perform Bhoomi Poojan For Rs 22,860 Crore Shillong–Silchar Corridor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform the Bhoomi Poojan on Saturday for the Shillong–Silchar Corridor, the first access-controlled Greenfield four-lane high-speed corridor in Northeast India.

Officials said the 166-km project will cost around ₹22,860 crore and significantly enhance connectivity between Meghalaya and Assam.

Once completed, the corridor will reduce the distance between Guwahati and Silchar, cutting travel time from the current 8.5 hours to approximately five hours. The improved connectivity is likely to boost economic activity, facilitate smoother movement of goods and people, and strengthen cross-border trade in the region.

The Prime Minister will also perform the Bhoomi Poojan for an elevated corridor on National Highway 306 in Silchar.

The proposed project will run from Trunk Road near Capital Point to Rangirkhari Point (Phase-I). It aims to ease congestion along one of Silchar’s busiest traffic routes and improve urban mobility.

The project will likely strengthen connectivity between Assam and neighbouring states such as Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur, contributing to the economic development of the Barak Valley.

In addition, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a new College of Agriculture at Patharkandi in Sribhumi district.

The institution will likely strengthen Assam’s agricultural education and research ecosystem, offering students in Barak Valley and neighbouring regions access to quality education and modern research facilities closer to home while promoting innovation and skill development in the agriculture sector.

Development Projects Launched in Guwahati

Earlier on Friday, PM Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth around ₹19,4800 crore in Guwahati.

Addressing a gathering, he extended greetings to the people of the city, farmers from across the country and workers in tea gardens. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for visiting the sacred land of the Kamakhya Temple on the eve of Navratri.

PM Modi said projects worth ₹19,500 crore had been launched with the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, adding that initiatives ranging from energy projects to connectivity improvements are creating employment opportunities and boosting prosperity in the region.

He also highlighted the importance of the Lower Kopili Hydro Power Project, stating that it would benefit not only Assam but the entire Northeast.
