PM Modi To Launch Year-Long Celebration Marking 150 Years Of ‘Vande Mataram’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 150th anniversary celebrations of ‘Vande Mataram’ on Friday at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, marking the beginning of a year-long nationwide commemoration of India’s national song.

The celebrations, which will continue until 7 November 2026, pay tribute to the iconic composition by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee that became a rallying cry for India’s freedom movement.

As part of the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister will release a commemorative stamp and coin, honouring the song’s 150-year journey.

The day’s events will also include mass singing of the full version of ‘Vande Mataram’ at 9:50 AM across the country, synchronised with the main programme in Delhi.

Citizens from all walks of life will participate in the collective rendition, symbolising unity and national pride.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote the song on Akshaya Navami, which fell on 7 November 1875, and later published it in his novel Anandamath in the literary journal Bangadarshan.

It embodies the spirit of India’s awakening, portraying the Motherland as a divine force of strength, prosperity, and resilience.

Delhi Assembly to Honour the Milestone

The Delhi Legislative Assembly will also host a special event to mark the 150th anniversary. Speaker Vijender Gupta will unveil a commemorative plaque dedicated to the milestone, followed by a cultural performance by artists from the Sahitya Kala Parishad celebrating the patriotic fervour of ‘Vande Mataram’.

To mark the occasion, the Assembly building will be illuminated in the tricolour, reflecting the song’s message of unity and devotion to the nation.

Describing the song as ‘the soul of India’s freedom movement’, Speaker Gupta said, “‘Vande Mataram’ is not merely a song, it is an immortal hymn to our motherland that continues to inspire sacrifice and patriotism.”

He added that the commemoration reaffirms India’s commitment to the ideals of unity, self-respect, and national pride, values that have defined the nation since the time of its independence struggle.
