PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped Tripura Sundari temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas revered by Hindus, on September 22 in southern Tripura’s Udaipur, announced Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday.
PM Modi will arrive in Agartala on the afternoon of September 22 and proceed to Udaipur, located 65 km south of the state capital, to inaugurate the temple. After the inauguration of the redeveloped temple and its beautified surroundings, PM Modi will offer prayers at the nearby Kali temple.
“There will be no public address by the Prime Minister as per the current schedule,” said Chief Minister Saha.
Following the inauguration and the religious ceremony, PM Modi will return to Agartala and depart for Delhi.
The Tripura Sundari temple, built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in India. It is part of the revered 51 Shakti Peethas, with the Tripura Sundari temple being the third in Eastern India, after Kalighat’s Kali temple in Kolkata and the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati.
Under the PRASHAD scheme (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) initiated by the Union Ministry of Tourism, the temple has been redeveloped at a cost of over ₹52 crore, with the Tripura government contributing an additional ₹7 crore to the project.
The redevelopment aims to enhance the infrastructure and facilities for devotees and tourists alike, making it a prominent religious and cultural destination.
Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, senior officials, including Director General of Police Anurag, recently visited Udaipur to ensure the necessary arrangements for the inauguration. CM Saha and other ministers also visited Udaipur last week to oversee preparations.
In addition to the temple redevelopment, Tripura is working on another ambitious project. The 51-Shakti Peethas Park in Banduar is located just 4 km from the Tripura Sundari temple.
The park, currently under construction, will feature replicas of all 51 Shakti Peethas and is being built at a cost of ₹97.70 crore. It aims to attract religious tourism and provide an immersive experience for visitors.
“The park will highlight the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Shakti worship in Hinduism,” said a Tourism Department official.
The park will offer a range of amenities, including:
The planners have designed the park to offer visitors a holistic spiritual and cultural experience. It is set amidst the tranquil and serene environment of the Gomati district.
The Tripura Sundari temple is a symbol of the state’s rich cultural and religious heritage. The upcoming inauguration by Prime Minister Modi will highlight the temple’s significance in Indian spirituality. It will also emphasise its place among the 51 Shakti Peethas.
The redevelopment and creation of the 51-Shakti Peethas Park will solidify Tripura’s status as a key pilgrimage and tourism hub.
