PM Modi To Inaugurate National Conference On Legal Aid Delivery At Supreme Court

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Conference on Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms at the Supreme Court on November 8, officials announced on Thursday.

The event marks another step toward improving access to justice for all citizens, especially the underprivileged.

During the programme, PM Modi will launch the Community Mediation Training Module developed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

He will also address the gathering, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s legal aid system and promoting accessible justice.

The two-day conference, organised by NALSA, will discuss critical aspects of legal aid delivery.

Sessions will focus on the Legal Aid Defence Counsel System, panel lawyers, and para-legal volunteers.

They will also discuss permanent Lok Adalats and the financial management of legal services institutions.

The event aims to create a more efficient, inclusive, and transparent legal support framework across the country.

The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, established NALSA to provide free legal aid.

It plays a vital role in ensuring justice for marginalised and weaker sections of society.

Its mission aligns with Article 39A of the Indian Constitution.

This article directs the State to promote justice on equal opportunity and offer free legal aid to the needy.

Article 39A ensures that no citizen is denied justice because of economic or social disadvantage.

Through legislation, schemes, and awareness initiatives, NALSA works to uphold this principle nationwide.

Currently, Justice Surya Kant, a judge of the Supreme Court, serves as the Executive Chairman of NALSA, while the Chief Justice of India (CJI) acts as its Patron-in-Chief.

At the state level, each State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) functions under the guidance of NALSA.

The Chief Justice of the respective High Court serves as the Patron-in-Chief, and the senior-most judge of the High Court acts as the Executive Chairman.

These authorities ensure free legal aid, organise Lok Adalats, and implement NALSA’s directives to enhance access to justice for all citizens.

The upcoming conference is expected to strengthen coordination between these institutions and set new goals for India’s evolving legal aid ecosystem.
