Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new terminal building of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati on Saturday, December 20, marking a significant step in Assam’s aviation and infrastructure expansion.
The new terminal is India’s first nature-themed airport facility and has been designed to mirror Assam’s natural landscape and cultural heritage, positioning Guwahati as a key gateway to the Northeast.
Ahead of the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi said in a post on X on Friday that the new terminal would substantially enhance passenger handling capacity while modernising aviation infrastructure in the region. The terminal has been built to handle more than 1.3 crore passengers annually, strengthening Guwahati’s role as a major aviation hub for the Northeast.
The integrated terminal features modern passenger amenities, improved circulation areas, and advanced security and baggage handling systems. Its architecture draws inspiration from Assam’s rivers, forests and biodiversity, offering travellers a strong sense of the region’s identity.
Alongside the terminal, several critical infrastructure upgrades have been completed at the airport. These include improvements to the runway, airfield systems, aprons and taxiways, aimed at enhancing safety, operational efficiency and the ability to handle increased air traffic.
The expanded facilities are expected to support operations of larger aircraft and contribute to improved on-time performance.
The inauguration is part of the Prime Minister’s visit to Assam, during which he is also scheduled to launch and lay foundation stones for multiple development projects spanning infrastructure, industry and connectivity.
The visit highlights the Centre’s emphasis on strengthening the Northeast as a strategic gateway to Southeast Asia under the Act East policy.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has termed the new terminal a “transformational project”, saying it would boost tourism, trade and investment while creating employment opportunities. He added that the enhanced capacity at Guwahati airport would further integrate the Northeast with the rest of India and global destinations.
With the commissioning of the new terminal, LGBI Airport is set to play a crucial role in driving economic growth, improving regional connectivity and elevating the travel experience for millions of passengers.
