Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a large public rally at Taherpur in the Ranaghat sub-division of Nadia district, West Bengal, on Saturday.
The rally marks the beginning of the BJP’s focused campaign to counter the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on issues related to the Matua community. The campaign will particularly address the impact of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The Prime Minister will directly address the Matua community’s concerns. This community is a socially backward Hindu group that migrated from Bangladesh as religious refugees.
The Matuas form a significant portion of voters in North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts. This makes the rally a crucial political event ahead of next year’s Assembly elections.
According to the tentative schedule, PM Modi will arrive in Kolkata from New Delhi at around 10:30 AM, before travelling to Ranaghat town by helicopter. He will land at the Ranaghat helipad around 11:15 AM and then travel by road to Taherpur.
At Taherpur, two separate platforms will host different events. On one day, the Prime Minister will virtually inaugurate central government projects, without making political remarks.
From the second dais, he will address the public rally, accompanied by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
A state BJP leader highlighted that the rally will address TMC’s alleged negative narratives regarding the SIR and its potential effect on Matua voters.
Political observers note that securing support from the Matua-dominated constituencies is crucial for the BJP. This support is seen as essential if the party aims to capture power in West Bengal in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The BJP views the rally in Ranaghat as a strategic move to consolidate its influence among Matua voters. The focus is especially on Nadia and North 24 Parganas, ahead of the polls.
Analysts also point out that the early involvement of the Prime Minister demonstrates the party’s serious intent, following its recent success in Bihar, and reinforces its campaign slogan, “After Odisha in 2024 and Bihar in 2025, it will be West Bengal in 2026.”
The rally underscores the political importance of the Matua community and the BJP’s commitment to engaging them directly. It also sets the tone for an intensified electoral strategy as parties gear up for next year’s crucial Assembly elections in West Bengal.
