Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his Diwali greetings and reaffirmed the shared resolve of India and the United States to stand united against terrorism in all its forms.
Speaking to reporters during his Diwali reception at the White House, President Trump said he had spoken with Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday and that the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral trade relations.
“I just spoke to your Prime Minister today. We had a great conversation. We talked about trade. Talked about a lot of things, but mostly the world of trade. He’s very interested in that,” Trump told the media.
Responding to the greetings, PM Modi posted on X, saying, “Thank you, President Trump, for your phone call and warm Diwali greetings. On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to illuminate the world with hope and stand united against terrorism in all its forms.”
During the Diwali celebration at the White House, President Trump described PM Modi as ‘a great person’ and said he held deep affection for ‘the people of India’.
Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra, newly appointed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard attended the event.
Prominent business figures from the Indian-American community were also present.
As part of the festivities, Trump lit a traditional diya in the Oval Office, calling it ‘a symbol of faith in the triumph of light over darkness’ and extended his warm wishes to the people of India.
The US President also reiterated his earlier claim of having helped ease tensions between India and Pakistan, a statement previously dismissed by New Delhi, which clarified that the ceasefire had followed a Pakistani request for de-escalation.
“We did talk a little while ago about let’s have no wars with Pakistan. Since trade remains a key factor, I was able to address it. And we have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing,” Trump said during the celebration.
