PM Modi Security Concerns Emerge As CCTV Footage Reviewed After Rajasthan Refinery Fire

A major fire at the Pachpadra Refinery in Rajasthan’s Balotra district has triggered a high-level investigation, with officials examining possible security lapses linked to protocols surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sources said the Ministry of Home Affairs is treating the incident seriously and exploring whether any lapses compromised established safeguards.

The inquiry has also included personnel responsible for securing vital petroleum infrastructure.

Teams from multiple agencies, including the National Investigation Agency and experts from the petroleum ministry, reached the site to begin a detailed assessment.

A central focus of the probe is the examination of CCTV recordings from across the refinery to detect any unusual activity before the fire.

Authorities have tightened access controls and enhanced surveillance measures for both staff and visitors while the investigation continues. It remains unclear which agency will take the lead in coordinating the overall probe.

The refinery, operated by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, spans a vast area and employs thousands.

While a complete damage report is yet to be released, early indications suggest the impact may be limited, raising hopes that operations could resume within weeks if key units remain unaffected.

Initial findings suggest the fire began in the Crude Distillation Unit, likely due to a hydrocarbon leak in the heat exchanger system. Emergency teams contained the blaze quickly, and no casualties were reported. Critical units isolated in time, preventing further spread.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the site and directed officials to conduct a thorough review. He also met firefighting teams involved in bringing the situation under control.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot raised concerns. He said experts rarely see such incidents in newly commissioned refineries unless technical issues exist.

Parallel investigations are underway, covering both technical faults and potential external factors. A separate expert panel formed by the petroleum ministry will determine the root cause and suggest corrective steps.

Forensic teams have collected evidence from the site. Additional specialists from other refineries are assisting in ensuring a comprehensive analysis.

Officials said continuous monitoring is in place to prevent any recurrence as repair work progresses.
