PM Modi Says Women’s Reservation Bill To Transform India’s Politics; Lok Sabha Clears Introduction

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that the Women’s Reservation Bill will significantly transform the direction and condition of India’s political landscape by ensuring greater participation of women in governance. He stated that empowering half of the population in decision-making would strengthen democratic institutions and contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047.

PM Modi also remarked that women voters have responded decisively to those who opposed the provision and urged political parties to view the reform beyond partisan considerations.

The Lok Sabha approved the introduction of the Bill following a formal division of votes after the Opposition demanded a recorded count.

Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, along with the Delimitation Bill, 2026, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, marking a crucial legislative step.

Speaker Om Birla announced that 251 members voted in favour while 185 opposed the motion, subject to verification.

The House conducted the voting through the Automatic Vote Recorder system and categorised responses under ‘Ayes’, ‘Noes’, and ‘Abstain’. It also used vote slips during the proceedings.

A total of 333 members cast their votes in the subsequent round, with no abstentions recorded.

Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Singh briefed members on voting procedures. He explained that divisions are invoked when outcomes remain contested, while voice votes remain the standard practice.

Members retained the option to revise their votes through slips if required.

The Opposition insisted on a division to ensure transparency, and the motion passed with a simple majority amid heightened political engagement.

The development marks a significant milestone in advancing women’s representation and signals a transformative shift in India’s legislative framework and democratic inclusivity.
