PM Modi Calls Women’s Reservation Bill A Historic Moment; Urges 33% Quota Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday referred to the discussion on the women’s reservation bill as a ‘historic moment’. He said that increased participation of women in lawmaking institutions would give a completely new direction to the nation.

PM Modi appealed to all political parties to come together in support of granting 33 per cent reservation to women in the Parliament of India and state legislatures. He added that such a move would help make up for the lost time.

Paying tribute to the country’s ‘nari shakti’, the Prime Minister said it is essential to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies. He stressed the need to do this without further delay.

PM Modi also warned that resistance to this proposal could have ‘negative consequences’.

Without naming any party directly, PM Modi noted that several lawmakers have privately expressed support for the bill. He cautioned that nearly half of the population may ‘never be forgotten and forgiven’ those who oppose it.

Prime Minister Modi urged opposition leaders not to approach the matter through a political lens or give it a partisan tone. He further stated that the focus should remain on building ‘a bright future for all’.

The Prime Minister said that anyone aspiring to succeed in politics must recognise that women have emerged as leaders at the grassroots level. He added that their role in national governance will only expand.

The Prime Minister noted that no one can delay their demands and expectations any longer.

PM Modi reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring equal representation.

“We are not doing any favour to women by extending reservations, but it is their innate right,” he stressed.

The Prime Minister added that the issue has remained unresolved for many years and now requires immediate action.

As opposition members created an uproar, PM Modi responded in a lighter vein. He also said that some leaders believe the move could benefit him politically and encouraged them to step forward and take credit for the measure.
