PM Modi Says Sustainability Could Drive India’s Next Textile Growth Phase

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the growing importance of sustainable practices in shaping the future of India’s textile industry.

PM Modi shared on X an article written by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, which outlined measures focused on recycling, waste recovery, cleaner manufacturing and environmentally conscious technologies.

The Prime Minister said these initiatives could help India develop a textile industry that combines circular production practices with stronger competitiveness.

Singh outlined a broad approach covering textile recycling, waste management, cleaner technologies and responsible manufacturing.

He said these measures could strengthen the industry’s market position while supporting a greener and more resilient future.

India Sets $350 Billion Textile Target

Singh said India aims to expand its textile and apparel industry to $350 billion by 2030, placing sustainability at the heart of its future competitiveness strategy.

He noted that sustainability now influences several parts of the industry, including production, market access and responsible business practices.

The minister also referred to PM Modi’s vision that “The world is adopting the vision of Fashion for Environment and Empowerment, and India can lead the way in this regard.”

According to the figures cited in the article, the market has grown from around Rs 6 lakh crore in 2014-15 to more than Rs 16 lakh crore.

The sector currently provides direct employment to more than 5.3 crore people and could add nearly two crore jobs over the next three years.

India is also pursuing greater resource efficiency and textile-waste recycling as part of its broader sustainability efforts.
