PM Modi Recalls Modhera’s Sun Temple Legacy In ‘Mann Ki Baat’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the history and resilience of Gujarat’s Modhera during the 138th edition of his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on Sunday, linking the centuries-old Sun Temple with the village’s transformation into India’s first 24×7 solar-powered village.

Recalling the Somnath Swabhiman Parv held earlier this year, PM Modi said the country began the year by celebrating its civilisational heritage and pride.

He recalled the 1026 Somnath attack and said invaders also attacked Modhera’s Sun Temple, built by Raja Bhimdev I in 1025.

He said Bhimdev I fought against the invasion and rebuilt the temple, describing its reconstruction as an example of the resilience that helped India’s cultural heritage endure.

The Prime Minister also recalled that the temple faced further attacks in later periods, including during the reign of Alauddin Khilji.

He said the tradition of worshipping the Sun represents not only faith and architecture but also light, energy, science and continuity.

PM Modi then linked Modhera’s historical association with the Sun to its modern identity as a solar-powered village.

He said Modhera today is known not only for its Sun Temple but also for its use of solar energy.

The Union government had earlier declared Modhera India’s first 24×7 solar-powered village in 2022. The project included a ground-mounted solar power plant and more than 1,300 rooftop solar systems on residential and government buildings, integrated with battery energy storage systems.
