PM Modi Highlights Rajinder Singh Senior’s Mission To Find Rural Hockey Talent

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide Talent Hunt campaign during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme to identify promising sporting talent from villages and remote areas across India.

He said finding future athletes requires reaching deep into rural communities and providing talented youngsters with opportunities to develop their skills.

The Prime Minister highlighted the work of Punjab-based hockey coach and former player Rajinder Singh Senior, who has dedicated himself to discovering and nurturing young players from rural areas.

Rajinder Singh Senior was part of the Indian hockey team that achieved major milestones, including the 1982 World Cup.

He was also associated with India’s first Junior World Cup title on home soil in 2001 and the Senior Asia Cup triumph in 2003.

Academy to identify and train promising village players.

PM Modi said several players he trained have reached India’s junior and senior national teams, highlighting the value of grassroots talent development.

PM Modi said such efforts are important for strengthening India’s sporting future and creating a wider pool of talented athletes. The newly announced Talent Hunt campaign aims to expand this approach across the country by encouraging coaches, academies and volunteers to reach rural areas, identify promising players and provide them with structured training.

The initiative seeks to give youngsters from villages and remote regions greater opportunities to pursue sport at the highest level.

By combining grassroots efforts with a nationwide talent identification programme, the campaign aims to create stronger pathways for young athletes to represent India on national and international platforms.
