PM Modi Raises Kerala Railway Allocation Nearly 10-Fold To Rs 3,795 Crore: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday that Kerala’s railway allocation has increased nearly tenfold under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, rising from Rs 372 crore in 2014 to Rs 3,795 crore in FY 2026-27.

Vaishnaw shared the details after meeting Members of Parliament from Kerala to discuss railway development and operational issues in the state.

He said the higher investment is driving infrastructure development, expanding railway capacity and improving passenger connectivity.

Kerala has achieved 100 per cent railway electrification, while the Railways has completed several doubling and gauge-conversion projects since 2014, Vaishnaw said.

According to the minister, the Railways completed six major doubling and gauge-conversion projects covering 670 km at a cost of Rs 4,316 crore. He said these projects have strengthened railway capacity and connectivity across the state.

The Railways has also constructed 131 road overbridges and underpasses and redeveloped 16 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Vaishnaw said.

He added that the Railways is currently executing projects worth more than Rs 20,000 crore in Kerala. These include nine multitracking and new-line projects, 145 road overbridges and underpasses, and redevelopment work at 19 stations.

During the meeting, Vaishnaw also discussed operational concerns in Mangaluru. He said dividing the Mangaluru railway area across three zones had created operational difficulties. The decision to retain Mangaluru under the South Western Railway (SWR) zone will help resolve these issues, he said.

Vaishnaw said the ongoing projects will increase railway capacity and enable smoother and more efficient operations across Kerala. He added that the Railways will continue to focus on strengthening infrastructure and improving passenger connectivity across the state.
