PM Modi Presents Culturally Significant Gifts To Russian President Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a carefully curated selection of gifts, reflecting India’s rich cultural heritage, artisanal skill, and enduring friendship with Russia.

The gesture coincided with Putin’s two-day state visit to India, which focused on strengthening strategic, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two nations.

• Fine Assam Black Tea

Among the gifts, PM Modi offered Assam Black Tea, cultivated in the fertile Brahmaputra plains. Known for its robust malty flavour and bright liquor, the tea is a symbol of India’s cultural legacy and carries potential health benefits. Recognised with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007, Assam tea, however, represents the craftsmanship and tradition of Assam’s tea growers.

• Ornate Silver Tea Set

The Murshidabad silver tea set, engraved with intricate designs, showcases West Bengal’s rich artistry. Celebrating the ritual of tea—a tradition cherished in both India and Russia—the gift signifies warmth, friendship, and cultural connection between the two countries.

• Silver Horse from Maharashtra

A handcrafted silver horse from Maharashtra, adorned with fine detailing, symbolises dignity, valour, and the enduring India-Russia partnership. Its poised stance reflects mutual respect and the progressive collaboration between the nations.

• Marble Chess Set from Agra

President Putin also received a marble chess set from Agra, featuring inlaid motifs, contrasting stone chessmen, and floral designs. This gift highlights North India’s stone inlay heritage under the ODOP (One District One Product) initiative, combining aesthetic craftsmanship with functional cultural value.

• Kashmiri Saffron

Kashmir’s prized saffron, locally called Kong or Zaffran, was included in the gift selection. Hand-harvested traditionally, saffron represents the region’s cultural heritage and economic importance for local farmers. Celebrated for its aroma, colour, and health benefits, saffron, however, exemplifies India’s natural and cultural wealth.

• Bhagavad Gita in Russian

A Russian translation of the Bhagavad Gita, one of India’s most revered spiritual texts, was also gifted. The text, part of the Mahabharata, offers Krishna’s guidance on duty, the soul, and spiritual liberation. The translation allows global readers, including President Putin, to engage with its timeless wisdom on ethical living and inner peace.

During his visit, President Putin held talks with PM Modi and other officials, discussing strategic, economic, and cultural cooperation. The exchange of culturally significant gifts complements these discussions, highlighting shared history, mutual respect, and long-term collaboration across multiple sectors.
