Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his speech in the Lok Sabha a day earlier, stating that it emphasised the importance of parliamentary traditions and the need for collective efforts for the country’s progress.
Taking to X, the Prime Minister appreciated the Home Minister’s address and its focus on strengthening democratic practices.
“A fine speech by Home Minister Shri Amitbhai Shah. His address is rich in facts and outlines the importance of Parliamentary traditions as well as the importance of working collectively for national progress,” the Prime Minister wrote.
During his speech in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Amit Shah strongly defended Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and criticised the opposition for submitting a notice seeking his removal from the Chair.
Responding to the debate on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker, Shah said the position of the Speaker rises above party politics and represents the entire House.
“The Speaker is the custodian of the entire House and accountable to all the members. Bringing a no-confidence motion against him is not an ordinary event. By doing so, the opposition has chosen to attack the very fabric of the Constitution as well as the democratic principles,” HM Shah said.
The Home Minister also criticised opposition parties for questioning the integrity of the Speaker, saying such actions weaken the credibility of democratic institutions. He said raising doubts about the neutrality of the Speaker undermines Parliament’s functioning and erodes public trust in constitutional positions.
According to Shah, there had been no extraordinary development warranting prolonged confrontation in the House, though the matter had already been discussed extensively.
Shah noted that differences over the Speaker’s decisions may arise, but Lok Sabha rules clearly state that the Speaker’s ruling is final. He also dismissed claims that the Leader of the Opposition was denied a chance to speak, stressing that the House follows established procedures for all members.
Referring to senior parliamentarians, Shah said figures such as Shashi Tharoor should advise Congress leaders to respect parliamentary traditions.
Addressing concerns over the absence of a Deputy Speaker, Shah said historical precedents contradict the opposition’s claims, adding that the Deputy Speaker presided over proceedings on all three previous occasions when a no-confidence motion targeted a Lok Sabha Speaker.
He also noted that in the past seven decades, three such motions targeted Lok Sabha Speakers, and the BJP did not move any of them.
