In a moving tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep admiration for legendary Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away on April 4 at the age of 87.
Through a heartfelt letter addressed to the actor’s wife, Shashi Goswami, PM Modi paid homage to the cinematic icon, often referred to as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic roles.
The Prime Minister’s letter was not just a formal tribute but a deeply personal message that reflected the mutual respect and admiration he shared with the late actor.
PM Modi recalled his interactions with Kumar during their meetings, sharing how those moments left a lasting impression on him.
He referred to Kumar as a ‘true icon of Indian cinema’ who inspired countless Indians through his artistry and unwavering commitment to the nation.
PM Modi praised Manoj Kumar’s enduring influence on Indian cinema, particularly for roles that celebrated patriotism and national pride.
Kumar showcased his unique ability to blend entertainment with social consciousness through films such as Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Kranti.
PM Modi noted that these works didn’t just entertain but instilled values of integrity and resilience in viewers across generations.
Before sending the letter, PM Modi had also shared his condolences via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
He wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal. His works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”
Manoj Kumar passed away at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
He was cremated with full state honours on April 5, with numerous celebrities, dignitaries, and admirers attending to pay their final respects.
The actor’s legacy remains deeply rooted in the Indian cultural and cinematic landscape.
