India observes Police Commemoration Day on October 21 every year to honour police personnel who die in the line of duty.
The day commemorates 10 Indian policemen who were killed by heavily armed Chinese troops in an ambush at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
The incident remains a significant chapter in the history of India’s police forces and serves as a reminder of the risks personnel face while protecting the country’s security and citizens.
Recognising the contribution of police personnel to national security and integrity, PM Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, to the nation on October 21, 2018.
The memorial honours police personnel who sacrificed their lives while upholding the law and protecting the public.
The memorial features a central sculpture, the Wall of Valour and a museum highlighting the history and service of India’s police forces. It serves as a national tribute to personnel from police organisations across the country.
Police forces across India honour fallen colleagues on Police Commemoration Day.
The observance also highlights the importance of recognising the sacrifices made by police personnel in maintaining peace, enforcing the law and ensuring public safety.
