On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the legacy of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 100th birth anniversary, celebrating his pivotal role in shaping India’s political stability, governance, and growth. The occasion also marked the observance of ‘Good Governance Day,’ a day to remember Vajpayee’s contributions toward strengthening democratic values and fostering national development.
In a heartfelt blog post, PM Modi described the 100th birth anniversary of Vajpayee as a ‘special day for all of us’, emphasizing the former Prime Minister’s lasting impact on the nation. He called Vajpayee the “architect of India’s transition into the 21st century,” noting that his leadership brought India out of a period of political instability.

PM Modi highlighted that when Vajpayee became Prime Minister in 1998, India had witnessed four general elections in just nine years, creating political uncertainty. “It was Atal Ji who turned this tide by providing stable and effective governance,” PM Modi wrote, acknowledging Vajpayee’s connection to the common citizen and his focus on governance as a transformative tool for national progress.
PM Modi elaborated on Vajpayee’s notable contributions, particularly in the fields of technology, infrastructure, and social reforms. He credited Vajpayee’s government with making significant strides in Information Technology, telecommunications, and communications.
One of his most significant legacies, according to PM Modi, was the Golden Quadrilateral Project, which linked the country’s major cities by road, enhancing connectivity. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and the Delhi Metro were ground-breaking initiatives that left an indelible mark on India’s infrastructure.
On the social front, PM Modi praised the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, a program aimed at providing universal primary education, which reflected Vajpayee’s vision of an inclusive India. He also acknowledged the economic reforms initiated under Vajpayee’s leadership, which paved the way for India’s economic growth after years of stagnation.
One of the most defining moments of Vajpayee’s tenure was India’s nuclear tests in 1998. PM Modi pointed to Operation Shakti as a demonstration of Vajpayee’s resolute leadership. Despite facing international sanctions, Vajpayee stood firm in asserting India’s sovereignty, sending a clear message to the world about India’s strength and independence.
Vajpayee’s approach to international relations was grounded in India’s right to self-defense while advocating for global peace, PM Modi noted.
PM Modi further highlighted Vajpayee’s role in the creation of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which redefined coalition politics in India. “He brought people together, making the NDA a force for development and national progress,” PM Modi wrote, praising Vajpayee’s ability to bridge political divides.
The Prime Minister also lauded Vajpayee’s remarkable ability to counter opposition criticism with dignity and substance. “He preferred to resign in 1996 rather than resort to horse-trading. In 1999, despite losing by one vote, he upheld integrity and returned with a resounding mandate,” PM Modi remarked.
Vajpayee’s commitment to democracy was rooted in his opposition to the Emergency imposed in 1975. PM Modi recalled how Vajpayee prioritized the Constitution and the nation’s interests over personal or party concerns, citing his role in the anti-Emergency movement and his decision to merge the Jan Sangh into the Janata Party in 1977.
PM Modi also praised Vajpayee’s deep pride in India’s culture, referencing his iconic speech at the United Nations, where he expressed his love for the nation’s heritage in Hindi.
Describing Vajpayee’s persona as “magnetic,” PM Modi acknowledged his contributions as a writer and poet whose words continue to inspire. Vajpayee’s poetry, reflecting his inner struggles and hopes for the country, remains relevant and resonates with people of all generations.
Concluding his tribute, PM Modi emphasized Vajpayee’s unwavering belief in India’s potential and his foundational contributions to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “On his 100th Jayanti, let us rededicate ourselves to realizing his ideals and fulfilling his vision for India,” PM Modi urged.
Vajpayee’s legacy as a leader who steered India through critical political, social, and economic transitions continues to inspire millions. His vision for a stable, prosperous, and self-reliant India endures, shaping the nation’s path toward a brighter future. As the nation remembers his centenary, Vajpayee’s ideals and principles remain a guiding light for generations to come.
