PM Modi Pays Homage To Swami Vivekananda On National Youth Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid rich tributes to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary, which is celebrated across the country as National Youth Day.

He described Swami Vivekananda as a powerful and enduring source of inspiration for India’s youth and said the occasion brings renewed strength and self-confidence to younger generations.

In a post on X, PM Modi said that Swami Vivekananda’s personality and works continue to energise the resolve for a Viksit Bharat. He expressed hope that National Youth Day would instil new strength and confidence among citizens, especially the youth, whom he described as the driving force of the nation’s future.

In a video message, the Prime Minister emphasised that Swami Vivekananda’s contributions transcend time and geography, inspiring every generation. He recalled that Swami Vivekananda believed fearless, selfless, pure-hearted and courageous youth form the foundation of a strong nation, and that he had immense faith in their potential.

Calling upon the younger generation to live up to that faith, PM Modi said that the world places growing hope in India because of the energy and enthusiasm of its youth, visible across villages, towns and cities.

Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, and introduced Indian philosophies such as Vedanta and Yoga to the West, earning global reverence.

His historic 1893 speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago revived global interest in Hinduism and interfaith dialogue. He also championed nationalism, social reform and service to humanity through the Ramakrishna Mission.

In 1984, the government declared January 12 as National Youth Day to motivate young people by connecting them with the ideals and teachings of Swami Vivekananda and encouraging their active participation in nation-building.
