Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on his strong relationship with former US President Donald Trump during an interview with US-based podcaster Lex Fridman. He described their bond as built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to their nations.
Recalling the Howdy Modi event in Houston, Modi highlighted Trump’s humility and trust. “A packed stadium for a political rally in the US is rare. After my speech, I suggested we take a lap around the stadium to greet people. Surprisingly, Trump agreed without hesitation, catching his security detail off guard,” Modi said.
Notably, Modi linked that moment to Trump’s resilience following the recent assassination attempt. “Even after being shot, Trump remained focused on his dedication to America. That same courage was evident when he walked hand in hand with me at the stadium,” Modi added.
Turning to Trump’s political future, Modi remarked that Trump appears “far more prepared” this time with a clear roadmap and a strong team. He recalled how, during their first meeting at the White House, Trump broke protocol to personally give him a tour. “He showed me around with no notes, no cue cards — just his deep knowledge of American history,” Modi said.
Moreover, Modi praised Trump’s continued outreach even after leaving office. “I met members of his team — Tulsi Gabbard, Vivek Ramaswamy, Elon Musk — and there was a family-like atmosphere,” he added.
Shifting focus to Elon Musk, Modi recalled his long association with the entrepreneur, now heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). “I’ve known him since my time as Chief Minister. He’s incredibly excited about the DOGE mission,” Modi said.
Meanwhile, Modi emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving governance efficiency. He cited the removal of 100 million fake identities, which saved nearly ₹3 lakh crore through Direct Benefit Transfer. Additionally, he highlighted the elimination of 40,000 unnecessary compliances and 1,500 outdated laws.
“In the end, it’s about freeing the system from inefficiency and dominance — something I see in Trump’s approach as well,” Modi concluded.
