Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the death of Vummidi Ethiraj, a veteran craftsman associated with the creation of the historic Sengol. Born on November 25, 1926, Ethiraj passed away on Wednesday.
In a condolence message issued in English and Tamil, PM Modi remembered Ethiraj’s contribution to preserving India’s cultural heritage. He also extended his sympathies to the bereaved family and those who admired the craftsman.
Deeply saddened by the passing of Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj Ji. Hailing from a distinguished family based in Tamil Nadu, he will always be remembered for his efforts in crafting the historic Sengol that was presented to Former Prime Minister Nehru. Many years later, in 2023, it was our Government which had the honour of giving the Sengol a place of pride in the new Parliament building. During that time, I had the honour of meeting Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj Ji and expressing gratitude for what he has done for our nation and culture. His life and craftsmanship represent a remarkable connection between India’s glorious traditions and our national journey. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.

The Prime Minister recalled that Ethiraj belonged to a distinguished family from Tamil Nadu. The family helped create the Sengol, which was presented to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, in 1947.
PM Modi also remembered meeting Ethiraj when preparations for the inauguration of the new Parliament building brought renewed attention to the historic sceptre.
The Prime Minister said the meeting allowed him to thank the veteran craftsman for his service to the nation and its cultural traditions.
The government installed the Sengol near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair on May 28, 2023. The move brought the sceptre’s history and the craftsmanship behind it to the attention of a wider audience, including younger generations.
The Sengol, crafted by the Chennai-based Vummidi Bangaru Chetty family, holds a place in India’s historical narrative because of its association with the transfer of power in 1947.
Ethiraj’s contribution connected traditional artistic skills with an important chapter in the country’s history. PM Modi’s tribute highlighted the people whose craftsmanship preserves cultural memory across generations.
The Prime Minister concluded his message by offering condolences to Ethiraj’s family and admirers. He ended the tribute with the prayer, ‘Om Shanti’.
