PM Modi Meets Commonwealth Games 2026 Medallists; Congratulates Historic Performances

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medallists and congratulated the athletes for their historic performances in boxing, judo, athletics and para-athletics.

PM Modi urged the country’s athletes to continue inspiring the nation following India’s performance in Glasgow.

India finished fourth in the medal standings with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, despite competing in a significantly reduced programme that excluded medal-rich sports such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting.

India’s boxing contingent returned with seven gold and three silver medals.

The gold medallists were Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal.

Jadumani Singh, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain and Narender Berwal won silver medals.

The seven gold medals also marked the best-ever performance by Indian women boxers at the Commonwealth Games.

India’s judo contingent produced its best-ever Commonwealth Games performance, winning four medals from 12 events, comprising two gold, one silver and one bronze, compared with three medals and no gold in 2022.

Khelo India athletes Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh created history by winning India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medals in judo.

Asmita became the first Indian woman judoka and Harsh the first Indian male judoka to win Commonwealth Games gold.

Athletics contributed 10 medals, including five silver and five bronze.

Gulveer Singh became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games, securing silver in the men’s 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m.

Boxing gold medallist Sakshi Chaudhary said meeting the Prime Minister was a proud and memorable experience for the athletes.
