Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid heartfelt tributes to Rani Lakshmibai on her birth anniversary, recalling her extraordinary courage and unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s honour.
Posting on X, he wrote: “A respectful tribute to Maa Bharti’s immortal warrior queen, Rani Lakshmibai, on her birth anniversary. The story of her bravery and valour in the first war of independence still fills the hearts of the countrymen with zeal and passion today.”
He added that a “grateful nation can never forget her sacrifice and struggle for the protection of the pride of the motherland”, reaffirming her enduring place in India’s collective memory.
Rani Lakshmibai remains one of the most iconic figures of the 1857 uprising, often regarded as the First War of Independence.
Born in 1828, she became the queen consort of the princely state of Jhansi in 1843.
Following the outbreak of the rebellion, she assumed leadership and fiercely resisted British rule, leading her troops into several key battles.
Her determination, leadership, and martial skill transformed her into a national symbol of resistance and empowerment.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to the warrior queen, writing on X, “Rani Lakshmibai Ji, who made the protection of the motherland the supreme purpose of her life, played an unforgettable role in shaping the revolution of 1857 with her foresight.”
He further noted that her courage and daring spirit challenged the British both ‘from their diplomacy to the battlefields’ and encouraged citizens to draw inspiration from her life.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also joined in commemorating the occasion.
In his tribute, he described her as ‘the epitome of indomitable courage, patriotism, and self-respect’, adding that she united the nation through her fearless struggle and provided direction to the 1857 movement. He stated that her ‘heroic life is exemplary for all of us’.
The remembrance of Rani Lakshmibai’s birth anniversary highlights her unparalleled impact on India’s struggle against colonial rule.
Her refusal to surrender, her leadership on the battlefield, and her unshakeable love for the motherland continue to inspire countless Indians.
As tributes poured in from leaders and citizens alike, the legacy of the warrior queen of Jhansi remains a powerful symbol of patriotism, courage, and national pride.
