PM Modi & Leaders Pay Tribute To Madan Mohan Malaviya On Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid homage to Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, remembering him as a visionary leader whose unparalleled contributions to education, social reform and the freedom movement remain etched in the nation’s history.

Marking Malaviya’s birth anniversary, the Prime Minister highlighted his lifelong dedication to the service of the nation and his pivotal role in awakening national consciousness during a critical phase of India’s struggle for independence.

PM Modi’s Message on Malaviya’s Legacy

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “On the occasion of his birth anniversary, respectful homage to Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji, who remained dedicated throughout his life to the service of the motherland. He played an important role in awakening national consciousness, along with social reform, to break the chains of slavery. His unparalleled contribution to the field of education in the country can never be forgotten.”

The Prime Minister’s message underscored Malaviya’s multifaceted legacy as a freedom fighter, educationist and social reformer whose ideals continue to guide the nation.

Tributes from Union Ministers

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Malaviya, describing him as a great social reformer who believed education to be the most powerful tool for societal transformation.

In his message, Shah said Malaviya’s vision behind the establishment of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) inspired generations of youth towards modern education rooted in Indian cultural values.

Shah further noted that Malaviya played a significant role in transforming the press into a medium for nation-building and remained committed to causes such as the eradication of untouchability and farmer welfare, contributions that will remain eternally memorable.

Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda remembered Malaviya as a pioneer of education and a staunch protector of Indian culture and mother tongue.

He said Malaviya strengthened the foundations of character-building among youth by instilling a deep sense of Indianness and moral values.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid homage, recalling Malaviya’s role as a freedom fighter, renowned educationist and social reformer.

He said Malaviya made education, moral values and social unity the pillars of nation-building, and that institutions like BHU continue to empower India’s intellectual consciousness.

Life and Contributions of Mahamana Malaviya

Born in 1861, Madan Mohan Malaviya was one of the most respected leaders of India’s freedom struggle.

Also popularly known as ‘Mahamana’ for his integrity and selfless service, he founded the Banaras Hindu University in 1916 with the vision of blending modern scientific education with India’s ancient cultural and spiritual traditions.

A senior leader of the Indian National Congress, Malaviya served as its president four times and consistently worked for Hindu-Muslim unity.

A strong advocate of press freedom, he also played a key role in journalism, using it as a platform to spread nationalist ideas.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the nation, Madan Mohan Malaviya was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2015.
