PM Modi & Leaders Hail India’s Historic Maiden ICC Women’s World Cup Triumph

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team for clinching their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title, describing their performance in the final as a display of ‘great skill and confidence’.

India ended its long-standing wait for the trophy after two heartbreaks in the 2005 and 2017 finals, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling encounter.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Finals. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports.”

Leaders Praise the ‘Women in Blue’

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya lauded the victory as an ‘iconic performance’, adding, “History scripted! What an iconic performance by our Women in Blue. 140 crore Indians are cherishing this proud moment. Congratulations, World Champions!”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed similar sentiments, writing on X, “Hats off to the world champion Team India. It is a crowning moment for the nation, as our team lifts the #ICCWomensWorldCup2025, elevating India’s pride to the skies. Your stellar cricketing skills paved the path of inspiration for millions of girls. Congratulations to the entire team.

Clinical All-Round Performance

South Africa, having won the toss, chose to bowl first — a decision India capitalised on with an assured batting display.

Openers Smriti Mandhana (45 off 58 balls) and Shafali Verma (87 off 78 balls) built a strong 100-run partnership, setting a solid foundation.

Jemimah Rodrigues (24), Harmanpreet Kaur (20), and Deepti Sharma (58 off 58 balls) contributed crucial runs, while Richa Ghosh’s brisk 34 off 24 balls pushed India to a formidable 298/7 in 50 overs.

For South Africa, Ayabonga Khaka stood out with figures of 3/58.

In reply, South Africa began steadily but faltered after early breakthroughs from Shafali Verma (2/36) and Shree Charani.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt fought valiantly, scoring a brilliant 101 off 98 balls, supported by Annerie Dercksen’s 37.

However, Deepti Sharma’s magical spell of 5/39 dismantled the middle order, sealing a 52-run win for India.

The triumph marks a watershed moment in Indian women’s cricket, inspiring a new generation of players.

Both Shafali and Deepti’s all-round brilliance was instrumental in scripting this victory, combining youthful flair with tactical composure.

As celebrations echoed across the nation, PM Modi’s words summed up the emotion of a billion hearts — a triumph not only for the Women in Blue but for India’s growing legacy in world sport.
